Welcome to Auckland

Welcome to the City of Sails, New Zealand's largest city. Imagine a cosmopolitan environment where everyone lives within half an hour of beautiful beaches, hiking trails and a dozen enchanted holiday islands. Add a sunny climate, a background rhythm of Polynesian culture and a passion for outstanding food, wine and shopping - you're beginning to get the picture of Auckland. Auckland is known in Maori language as Tamaki-Makau-Rau, this means ''Tamaki of deep desires' or "The City of Hundred Lovers". It earned this name because it was a place desired by all and conquered by many. Auckland's blend of islands, glistening harbours and modern city environment creates an unbelievable lifestyle ranked amongst the best in the world. Auckland has one of the highest ownership of cars per head in the world. Nestled between two harbours and a gulf full of islands, Auckland is as much about the sea as it is about the land. Auckland has the greatest number of pleasure boats per capita in the world. The many sails dotting the harbour are not only one of the greatest attractions of this beautiful city, but are also responsible for Auckland's fame as 'The City of Sails'.

Auckland has a population of approximately 1.3 million people and thrives as a hub of creative colourful local culture with its eclectic mix of people. The city is a home to over 900 outdoor cafes, bisros and award winning dining rooms. Auckland has perfected the style of cuisine called "Pacific Rim", blending Asian and Pacific flavours. The historic inner city suburbs of Ponsonby, Herne Bay and Parnell offer dozens of dining options, or try a waterfront restaurant in the Amex Viaduct Harbour or Mission Bay. To go with the food, Auckland produces a number of award-winning wines from its 80-plus vineyards. After dinner, there are plenty of options for enjoying Auckland's nightlife. Lively bars and pubs - many of which also serve food - can be found all over the central city, while the big dance clubs are centred on Karangahape Road, known locally as K Rd. The city's casino is located in the Sky City complex, which also has bars, restaurants. Live music and theatre can be found in large venues such as the Aotea Centre, the Bruce Mason Theatre and Sky City Theatre. Visual arts are on show at the city's numerous galleries. All of New Zealand's top fashion designers, many of which are gaining international reputations, have stores in Auckland.

Covering a staggering 16,140 squre km , it is the 2nd largest geographically spread city in the world. Within the boundaries of this city are 21 regional parks (37,091 hectares), over 50 volcanic sites, and over 1,600 km of coastline. The Auckland region is divided into 4 parts; Central Auckland City between Waitemata and Manukau Harbours, North Shore City to the north over Harbour Bridge, Waitakere City to the west and Manukau City to the Bombay Hills in the South.
